What is the fertilizer with the longest-lasting effect?
When I was a child, almost every household applied manure to their fields, so the soil wasn't as compacted as it is today.
Fertilizers with the longest effectiveness are primarily concentrated in three categories: organic fertilizers, slow- and controlled-release fertilizers, and phosphorus fertilizers. Their effective periods generally range from several months to one year or even several years, far exceeding those of quick-acting fertilizers (such as ordinary water-soluble fertilizers and ammonium carbonate, which last only a few days to weeks). Specific classifications and durations of effectiveness are as follows:
1. Organic fertilizer (effective period: several months to several years)
Representative fertilizers: well-rotted farmyard manure (animal manure, compost), commercial organic fertilizer, green manure, etc.
Fertilizer characteristics: slow-acting (typically requiring 15–30 days or more to gradually release nutrients), but with extremely long-lasting effects, sustaining the entire crop growth period and even continuing to improve soil quality and enrich fertility for 2–3 years beyond the growing season, offering strong residual benefits.
2. Slow- and controlled-release fertilizer (effective period: several months to over half a year)
Representative fertilizers: coated urea, controlled-release compound fertilizers, slow-release nitrogen fertilizers, etc.
Fertilizer characteristics: Utilizing a special coating technology to control the slow release of nutrients, providing relatively stable and gradual effectiveness (release begins after about half a month). The fertilizer effect is long-lasting, typically lasting from 3 to 12 months, making it suitable for single application as a base fertilizer to meet crop needs for one growing season or even longer.
3. Phosphorus fertilizer (effective period: 1–2 years)
Representative fertilizers: superphosphate, calcium-magnesium phosphate fertilizer, etc.
Fertilizer characteristics: Phosphorus fertilizer has poor mobility in soil and is easily fixed, resulting in very slow release. Its utilization rate in the same year may be low, but it provides strong residual effects, with fertilization benefits lasting 1 to 2 years. It should be applied deeply as a basal fertilizer.
Note: The actual duration of fertilizer effectiveness is influenced by factors such as soil temperature, moisture, pH, application method, and crop type. Slow-release fertilizers typically require deep incorporation as base fertilizer to achieve optimal results.
