How to Fertilize Chinese Chives in Summer

The first type is well-rotted organic fertilizer, which serves as the foundational nutrient for thickening leek growth in summer. Common examples include decomposed sheep manure, decomposed chicken manure, and fermented oilcake fertilizer. These fertilizers offer balanced nutrients and long-lasting effects without causing soil compaction. Applying organic fertilizer during summer improves soil conditions and strengthens root systems, enabling leeks to develop deep roots with stable nutrient absorption, resulting in thicker stems later on. This type of fertilizer is suitable both as a base fertilizer and a top dressing, applied once per month.

The second type is balanced compound fertilizer. Compound fertilizers contain three essential nutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Nitrogen ensures normal leaf growth in leek, phosphorus strengthens the root system, and potassium makes the stems sturdy and thick. Potassium deficiency in summer is a primary cause of weak plant growth. For normally growing leeks, applying a small amount of compound fertilizer every twenty days, followed by watering to dissolve and absorb it, will significantly stabilize their growth.

The third type is foliar fertilizer. During hot weather, soil fertilization absorbs slowly, so foliar fertilizer can be used to supplement nutrients. Primarily composed of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, it is diluted with water and sprayed onto leek leaves, quickly replenishing potassium, inhibiting excessive growth, strengthening existing stems and leaves, and improving the quality of the next harvest.
