Topsoe wins U.S. blue ammonia fertilizer technology contract

China Chemical News: Recently, Danish company Topsoe announced that it has signed an agreement with US firm J Westling & Co. to provide technical solutions for the latter's blue ammonia fertilizer project located in Gothenburg, Nebraska. The project aims to produce low-carbon ammonia, providing local fertilizer raw materials for farmers in the Midwestern United States and reducing reliance on imported supplies. 
Topsoe will deliver its advanced SynCOR Ammonia self-heating reforming technology, proprietary equipment and catalysts. This technology uses natural gas as the raw material and combines carbon capture and storage processes to produce low-carbon ammonia. The project is designed to have a daily production capacity of approximately 454 tons, and is expected to commence operation in 2029. 
This collaboration marks the first time that Topsoe's SynCOR Ammonia technology has been specifically applied to the production of low-carbon fertilizers. Unlike most blue ammonia projects that serve as energy carriers, this project focuses on the end application of fertilizers. Currently, the cost of transporting ammonia from the Gulf Coast to Nebraska is between $100 and $120 per ton. Localized production will significantly reduce the raw material costs for local farmers. 
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance's forecast, by 2030, clean ammonia (blue ammonia and green ammonia) will account for approximately 13% of the global ammonia supply. The United States is expected to contribute about one-third of the production capacity.
