What is a nitrogen fertilizer? What is a phosphorus fertilizer? What is a potassium fertilizer? What nutrients are found in organic fertilizers? What nutrients do vegetables need? And so on.
First, it’s important to know that crop growth requires more than a dozen different nutrients, including macronutrients: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; secondary nutrients: calcium, sulfur, and magnesium; and micronutrients: boron, iron, manganese, zinc, molybdenum, copper, chlorine, and others. All of these are essential nutrients for crop growth, but crops require nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium the most—none of which can be neglected.
Nitrogen fertilizer is vital for crops and essential for growth; the growth of all plant cells depends on it. Without nitrogen, crops cannot grow and will become yellow, stunted, and weak. Whether it is the growth of branches and leaves or the development of fruit, nitrogen fertilizer is essential. It promotes dark green foliage and vigorous seedlings; without sufficient nitrogen, seedlings will struggle to grow. Therefore, regardless of the type of vegetable being grown, nitrogen fertilizer is indispensable.
Phosphorus fertilizer is indispensable for promoting root development, stimulating flower bud differentiation, increasing crop yield, and improving crop quality. Without sufficient phosphorus, crops will produce fewer flowers or fail to flower at all, suffer from poor root development, and produce lower-quality fruits. As the saying goes, “Nitrogen promotes foliage growth, phosphorus promotes fruit growth, and potassium deficiency turns crops into firewood.” Therefore, phosphorus fertilizer is essential, particularly for fruit and root crops.
Potassium fertilizer is essential for improving crop stress and disease resistance, preventing lodging, promoting photosynthesis, increasing yield, and enhancing quality. It ranks alongside nitrogen and phosphorus as one of the three major nutrients. A lack of potassium fertilizer not only results in weak growth, increased pest and disease incidence, and susceptibility to lodging, but also adversely affects yield and quality. Melon and fruit crops, as well as root and tuber crops, are particularly dependent on potassium fertilizer. This is why it is often said that fertilization requires a balanced combination of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium; however, since each crop has different requirements for these nutrients, the application must be tailored to the specific needs of each crop.
